The strength of depression
The strength of depression: self-management, experiential knowledge and experiential expertise of depression.
Pro Persona Mental Health Care and the Dutch Depression Association conducted a qualitative study in people with recurrent depression for the project ‘The strength of depression’. Together with experiential experts, relatives and health care professionals, interviews and focus groups were conducted to gain deeper insight in de the development of experiential knowledge and self-management of depression. The main question was ‘How can people with depression benefit from experiential knowledge of their fellow sufferers?.
In this study, personalized information and approachable contact with fellow sufferers were identified as relevant factors in the exchange of experiential knowledge. These conditions are implemented in ‘Depression Connect’, an online community for people with depression and their relatives. The aim of the community is to stimulate the development and deployment of experiential knowledge and self-management in living with depression. Registration is possible via www.depressievereniging.nl.
The online community will be evaluated and improved, together with the users. An evaluation study is carried out which will identify the usefulness of the online community. Results on empowerment and quality of life will be assessed.
